Dividing the Self
This course explores and develops the idea of “scripted material” in ways that center on the study of The Self. Through a series of writing challenges and the documentation of multiple perspectives, students make an investigation of compositional concerns and the arrangement of material that is continually shaped and reshaped as a matter of process. The “self” is divided into a myriad of voices. It can take but a moment to create spontaneously from these voices, but much longer to weave that material into real meaning that can be shared with others.
The Informed Critic
Film historian Dr. Allen Woll and filmmaker Robert A. Emmons Jr. will join forces in the new Honors Seminar "The Informed Critic." Students will learn to evaluate all types of films -- from independent productions and documentaries to Hollywood mega films--from a variety of viewpoints. We'll evaluate the changing role of critics through the decades, and then consider how film criticism has changed first in the age of television and, more recently, the era of the internet. As a class project, students will bring their critical skills to a new vidcast from the Honors College , as they offer their views on current films to audiences around the globe.
Student partner film reviews coming April 2007!
