THE HONORS COLLEGE AT RUTGERS-CAMDEN
Academic Standards Policy

[Amended Fall, 2004]

1. To participate in the Honors College at Rutgers-Camden a student must receive a 3.0 average each semester and fulfill the Honors College curricular requirements in a timely fashion. Students must complete at least 12 credits each semester in order to retain eligibility.

2. In order to receive “General Honors” on the transcript, students must achieve a minimum final cumulative average of 3.0 by the end of the Senior year in addition to having fulfilled the Honors College curricular requirements.

3. All decisions regarding a student’s on-going status in the College are based on the semester GPA. This policy is separate and apart from the policy outlined above regarding graduation with General Honors, which is based on the Cumulative average.

The academic performance of all HC students will be reviewed each fall and spring semester. If in any semester a student’s semester GPA is below 3.000, the student will be placed on General Honors probation. If the semester GPA is again below 3.000 at the end of the following semester, the student will be dismissed from the Honors College. Students placed on General Honors probation or dismissed from the Honors College will receive a letter informing them of their status, and describing the various avenues for appeal (see #5 below). Dismissal from the Honors College does not affect the student’s enrollment in the College of Arts and Sciences or the School of Business.

Provost/Academic Excellence Fellowships will be renewed yearly if a student maintains a 3.0 Cumulative average.

4. Any incomplete (IN or TZ) grade(s) will be counted when semester averages are reviewed. It is the responsibility of the student to inform the Honors College Director, through the submission of an up-to-date, unofficial transcript, of any changes of grade(s). If such a change of grade results in a semester GPA above 3.000, the student’s status will be appropriately adjusted, and a letter to that effect will be sent to the student.

5. Any HC students who are placed on probation or dismissed from the Honors College are urged to meet with the College Director to discuss their current GPA, to consider the circumstances--academic or otherwise--which might have affected the academic performance, and to discuss specific steps to improve that performance. This meeting should take place as soon as possible after the student receives the semester grades.

6. Any students who have been dismissed from the College may appeal the decision in writing to the Director, stating the basis for such an appeal, and including any extenuating circumstances which they feel may have affected that semester’s academic performance.

7. Students who have been dismissed from the Honors College may request to be considered for readmission whenever their semester GPA equals 3.000. Readmission to the Honors College does not guarantee the restoration of the Provost/Academic Excellence Fellowship.

8. Students who have been dismissed from the College will not be allowed to enroll in, or remain enrolled in, Honors Seminars.

9. Students who are dismissed from the College after the Fall semester, and who are living in Honors Housing, may continue to live in Honors Housing for the Spring semester. However, students who are dismissed or placed on probation after the Fall semester will not be allowed to request housing on the Honors floor for the following academic year, although they are still eligible to live in the residence hall. If such students are then reinstated or removed from probation, and would like to live in Honors Housing, they may request a room transfer from the College Director. However, there is no guarantee of room availability in the Honors section.

10. Transfer students are welcome in the Honors College when they arrive on campus, but once students have completed 66 credits they can no longer apply for admission to the Honors College. We recommend that these students apply to departmental honors porgrams in order to enjoy the honors experience.
