27th Annual State Constitutional Law Lecture, “Equality and the Impossible: State Constitutions and Marriage”

Featured Speaker: Mary Bonauto, Shikes Fellow in Civil Liberties and Civil Rights and Lecturer on Law at Harvard Law School, Civil Rights Project Director, Gay and Lesbian Advocates & Defenders (GLAD). Ms. Bonauto is civil rights project director for Gay & Lesbian Advocates & Defenders (GLAD), and is on the advisory board for the American Constitution Society. She was co-counsel in the 1999 landmark case before the Vermont Supreme Court which led to the nation’s first civil union law, as well as lead counsel in Massachusetts’s same-sex marriage case (2003). She successfully argued before the U.S. Supreme Court in the historic case of Obergefell v. Hodges (2015) for the establishment of freedom to marry for same-sex couples. She was chosen as a MacArthur Fellow in 2014.
