This session will focus on This War of Mine: a war survival game that focuses on the civilian experience of war rather than front line combat. It is based on the siege of Sarajevo which was the longest city siege in modern history. In This War Of Mine you do not play as an elite super soldier, rather a group of civilians trying to survive in a besieged city; struggling with lack of food, medicine and constant danger from snipers and hostile scavengers. The game provides an experience of war seen from an entirely new angle. To further this, it has many interesting mechanics like the complex moral/karma system which comes into effect when the characters have to make difficult decisions. The discussion will focus on the tragedy of war and the way war is traditionally portrayed in video games.
