From Test-Tube Babies to Uterus Transplants: Assisted Reproduction and the Pursuit of Parenthood
Join us on Wednesday, February 16 at 11:20 am for a Scarlet Scholars virtual event featuring Dr. Margaret Marsh, University Professor of History. Dr. Marsh previously served as dean of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences and twice as interim chancellor at Rutgers–Camden. This talk is drawn from her recent book, The Pursuit of Parenthood: Reproductive Technology from Test-Tube Babies to Uterus Transplants, which she co-authored with her sister and long-time collaborator Wanda Ronner, MD. The book examines the history of the unprecedented ways by which families can now be created, beginning with the efforts to create embryos outside a woman’s body and ending with such new developments as mitochondrial replacement techniques (so-called “three-parent embryos”) and uterus transplants. These new reproductive technologies have been liberating for some and deeply unsettling for others. In their book, Marsh and Ronner answer a range of challenging questions and assess the impact of contemporary reproductive technology in the United States.
