According to the 2019 Point-in-Time count, there are about 600 people in Camden County experiencing homelessness on any given night.

In an effort to raise awareness of this issue, the Civic Scholars will be hosting a “Sleepout for Homelessness” on the Rutgers-Camden campus on Thursday, November 14th from 8:00 PM-7:00 AM.  This event will feature educational activities, including a panel discussion with local experts on homelessness, a safe sleepout, and a morning reflection. Light snacks and cardboard (for sleeping) will be provided, and the event will be secured throughout the night by the RUPD. Be sure to bring your own sleeping bags and dress warmly!!

In addition to raising awareness, we are trying to raise funds for Joseph’s House of Camden, one of the largest overnight homeless shelters in Camden. Joseph’s House provides hope and help to approximately 85 men and women every night. This includes providing basic human needs (food, shelter, access to showers and laundry), and providing opportunities to change our guests lives for the better  (such as assistance obtaining identification, finding employment, securing housing, mental/medical health consultations, and connections to other essential social service agencies). Our hope is to raise $10,000 through the “Sleepout for Homelessness”.
